We celebrated the sale of our 500th CD by getting together last week with a box of art supplies, some old magazines, five pizzas, and some beer. By the end of the night, we had created the Canasta influences CD, a one-of-a-kind production harking back to the years of mix tapes.
The CD consists of some orginal Canasta artwork (doodles?) and a lineup of some of our favorite artists. The list wasn't easy to come up with, but we finally settled on the following:
- Elliot Smith - Waltz #2 (XO)
- Belle & Sebastian - The Model
- The Decemberists - The Soldiering Life
- Spoon - The Way We Get By
- Kraftwerk - The Model
- Wilco - Kamera
- Nick Drake - One Of These Things First
- The Shins - The New Slang
- The Delgados - Coming In From The Cold
- Radiohead - No Surprises
- Mercury Rev - Opus 40
- Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye
- Neutral Milk Hotel - Song Against Sex
- Stereolab - Infinity Girl
- The Magnetic Fields - The Luckiest Guy On The Lower East Side
- The Sea And Cake - The Colony Room
- Yo La Tengo - Moby Octopad
- Death Cab For Cutie - Title And Registration
- The Flaming Lips - The Spiderbite Song
- Rufus Wainwright - Apil Fools
As for the artwork, you'll have to judge for yourself. While we certainly had fun with the box of art supplies, its probably best we put down the Cray-Pas and get back to our instruments.
Canasta has another radio appearance coming up. This Saturday, June 12, we'll be in the studio of DePaul University's radio station, WRDP (640 AM), as part of their Music with Meaning festival. We'll be on from 2-4 pm, and we'll be followed by our friends the Scotland Yard Gospel Choir, so be sure to tune in for a rollicking musical afternoon.
