CANASTA - TUE. w/ The DELGADOS & SYGC + NEW MP3's

(sent on 2004-10-23)

Hey everyone. Hope you're having a lovely autumn. Fresh off the CMJ Music Marathon (where we played to an excellent crowd, thanks to our friends in NYC!), Canasta is making our debut at Double Door this Tuesday, October 26. We couldn't be more thrilled to be opening up for Scottish indie-pop superstars The Delgados -- who are not only the biggest band we've shared a bill with, but one of our favorite bands as well. Their melodic, orchestral rock sound has definitely been an influence on several Canasta songs. Take a listen to this MP3 to see what we mean. We'll be the second of four bands, after The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir and before Crooked Fingers (Eric Bachman of Archers of Loaf), which means we'll be taking the stage at 9:45 sharp, so make sure you come early!

If you're still not convinced, perhaps some glowing write-ups in the local press will convince you. Both "The Onion" and "New City" highlighted the show, while The "Reader" selected it as a Critic's Choice, and The "Tribune" / Metromix has said it's a Sure Bet: "...(The Delgados') bursts of optimism arrive as refreshing ocean breezes blown to shore via cascading harmonies, fizzing-champagne rhythms, surf-pop melodies and burbling electronics." If that doesn't sound enticing, I don't know what does.

In other news, we've also added a few new live mp3s to the Canasta website. On the Audio page, you can find a new song we've been playing for a few months, with the working title of "Shadowcat." (If you've seen us live lately, you'll recognize it.) You can also download FOUR previously unavailable cover songs. "Major Tom (Coming Home)" and "Tom's Diner" were recorded at Hoot Night last month at Schubas; "Let's Stay Together" was played at the Badresa.com launch party at Subterranean; and "Seeing Other People" originates from one of our first shows ever, at the Beat Kitchen, on the night President Bush announced the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Enjoy!

Lastly, we just learned that a to-be-named Canasta song will be featured (at least in part) on WBEZ's "Hello Beautiful" this Sunday at 10:00 AM (91.5 FM). They're doing a piece on some upcoming live shows around town and it looks like the aforementioned is to be one of them. So that should be cool too.

See you on Tuesday!
