CANASTA / GUEST VOCALISTS - FINAL SCHUBAS SHOW: THIS MONDAY (4/24)
(sent on 2006-04-24)
Howdy Canasta fans,
First of all, we'd like to thank everyone who's come out to Schubas the last few Mondays to see us perform. There have been some great crowds, and we've had a lot of fun, especially unveiling new originals and covers. Our final show as part of the Practice Space residency will be today, Monday, April 24, and boy, it's a doozy!
Opening for us will be Austin power-pop combo Moonlight Towers, as well as local lounge-pop duo The Aluminum Group, who are making a rare appearance. (Their last club date in Chicago was nearly two years ago.) We consider it an honor to have them play this show with us, so be sure to come early enough to check them out!
The other reason you won't want to miss this show is that we've asked several folks to contribute guest lead vocals on a song of their choosing, just for fun. So if you've ever wondered what Canasta would sound like without Matt behind the mic, wonder no more. We've got Matthew Kerstein of Brighton, MA, Elia Einhorn of The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir, Tony Sackett of Warm Ones, and longtime fan Mat Calvert to give us their own renditions of a few Canasta classics.
And last but not least, stick around after the show because there'll be an after-party upstairs at Schubas featuring live dance mixes from DJs Seaworthy and Nick Fiction -- otherwise known as John from Canasta and Nick from The Fake Fictions. It'll be so hot. We promise.
In other news, we've recently gotten a few more glowing mentions in the press. In a preview of Monday's show, Flavorpill notes that our “meticulous orchestrations … adorn lyrical, buoyant pop tunes, recalling the delicacy of Belle and Sebastian and the lush, upbeat melodies of the Shins.” Chicagoist says that We Were Set Up is “an unequivocal delight full of slavish devotion to melodic pop song structures.” And the acclaimed website PopMatters also waxes enthusiastic about the album, saying that “each song is a barrage of hooks and nuanced performances&rdquol and that our “value to the pop music scene continues to grow.” Right on.
See you on Monday!
