CANASTA w/ WHITE RABBITS - Madison (Tue. 6/30) + Chicago (Wed. 7/1)

Hi there -

We're still hard at work on the follow-up to We Were Set Up, so apart from the occasional live performance, there isn't much to report. Thankfully though, our next two live gigs should be killer. We're pleased to announce that we'll be supporting Brooklyn's White Rabbits in both Madison and Chicago, on Tuesday, 6/30 and Wednesday, 7/1, respectively. The former takes place at the High Noon Saloon and the latter, Empty Bottle. A few of us in the band caught them at last year's Lollapalooza and have been crazy about them ever since. Like Canasta, they're a sextet with lots of emphasis on piano and melody, plus a love for beer hall singalongs.... but with two drummers and an affection for reggae, ska, surf rock and calypso, they're equally likely to bring to mind the rhythmic propulsion of bands like Madness, The Specials and Spoon (whose Britt Daniel produced their latest album). To get a taste of what's in store, check out their last two appearances on Letterman, from 2009 and 2008. These shows are gonna be excellent, but crowded as well, so arrive early!

As for the record, it's shaping up clock in at 11 or 12 tracks and just under an hour long. Along with all the familiar sounds from the last one (violin, cello, trombone, trumpet, Rhodes piano and Wurlitzer organ), this time, we're also adding saxophone, Mellotron and melodica(!), as well as Farfisa, Vox and Hammond B3 organs. You'll also notice the addition of louder drums, countless guitar pedals and a lot more bass guitar. In fact, if I didn't know any better, I'd say we're making an honest-to-goodness "rock" record.
